Data within this systematic category seem to be developed somewhat inconsistently across the whole field of domesticated organisms, and we are only just getting started with getting an overview of the data and figuring out how to work with this field. The idea of cultivar groups is to group organisms within a crop based on a very narrow focus on characteristics, usually a single one, such as color or a growth habit. This category thus overlaps to a some extent the function of the descriptor data (see further down).

Sources
So far we have only looked at the first of theses sources, and are planning to approach the ISHS in the hope to achieve access.
- Swedish Utility and Cultivated Plants Database, SCUD: https://skud.slu.se/nav/taxa (more about the source)
- Data from the ICRA‘s in the ISHS network. These should be the ones to keep records about cultivar-groups (or Groups as the ICNPC calls them). The ICRA’s probably have a lot of data, but their websites are varying a lot in terms of what they show and how.
Tell us about other sources we should check!
Method
So far we have used SCUD just from the data available in frontend, and done the following:
- extracted an overview of cultivar groups only
- built our own cultivar group table based on this and placed names into separate language columns
- given all entries unique IDs (persistent UUIDs)
The next thing we are going to do is:
- To suggest translations into English so that all groups at least have an English name
- Set all entries to “unverified”
- Publish the table in our system “as is” for further development by the monitoring team via culton.info
- If SCUD permits, we will also use their cultivar list to assign groups accordingly
Data
Our first beta version of the checklist service will run from beta.culton.org. Here at culton.org development datasets, mostly in spreadsheet format, are intended for internal discussion among logged in participants of the project. If such data has been posted, there is a link to it below here:
